Leadership in the Tactical Environment

This class is offered Wednesday, Thursday OR Friday (8 hours)

Instructors: Kelly Sandell, LAPD SWAT (retired)

SWAT Team Leader with over 28 years of law enforcement experience.  Positions held within SWAT included explosive breacher, sniper, and lead diver in the team's tactical waterborne unit.

Kelly brings to the table his vast experience in operational planning, tactical command / oversight involving hundreds of operations ranging from hostage rescue, dynamic search warrants, narcotic interdiction, barricaded suspects and much more.  In addition, he's also played an integral part in the selection process, testing, try-outs and training of potential SWAT candidates over the years.  Due to his leadership, innovation and dedication Kelly is a sought after presenter and consultant by numerous local, state and federal law enforcement agencies throughout the US. 

Class Description

Identify the core qualities of a tactical leader. Identify their specific roles and what the Team should expect from their leader. How to best test for and identify those qualities needed from individuals to form an effective and cohesive tactical unit. Discuss the various challenges a tactical team leader will confront, the importance to be flexible and maintain a variety of options / responses to a fluid and dynamic incident. Increasing effectiveness by conducting thorough assessment of situation; planning and initiation of the mission. How to properly convey the assignments and expectations to the team during the brief and how critical an honest and all-encompassing debrief is to the team.
